Switzerland 2014 – Day 3 / Mount Rigi

CHEESE COUNT: fondue 1 / raclette 0
We a wonderfully full day!
The plan was to go up to Mount Rigi, known as "The Queen of the Mountains". That means: Train from Bern to Lucerne, then boat to Weggis, then cable car to Rigi-Kaltbad, then decide if we take the cog wheeled train to the summit (Rigi Kulm)or hike up which would take a little over an hour.

It was too hot so we opted for the train and decided to hike down after lunch.
The forecast said no rain and clearing skies, but we were not that lucky: we were IN a cloud for most of the trip. The low clouds meant that we could not see the peaks from the ground, and once at the summit we were above the clouds, but saw only the peaks that decided to wink out at us through the fog. No views of spectacular sprawling mountain & valley vistas. What views we did have lasted only about an hour or so before the fog rolled in and hid everything.

It wasn't a TOTAL waste, we had intermittent spots of great views and still enjoyed the day - but this Day Trip is firmly on the list of things to do in COMPLETELY CLEAR weather. I have to say that the covered skies where not unwelcome at times, especially during the hike down to Rigi Kaltbad because when we did get a bit of sun, it was too hot!!! The fog created a really neat atmosphere however, making people look like ghostly apparitions that vanished into the void ahead of us.
Same goes for the cows, ha!

We got back to Lucerne by about 5PM and promptly went to see if we could get in to The Old Swiss House for supper. We discovered it (thanks to a recommendation from our Chicago friends) in 2011 and declared that no trip to Switzerland would ever be complete without a visit to this restaurant. Luck was on our side: we nabbed the last 6PM Rez! Man, it was awesome.

Looking forward to (praying for) a good night's sleep tonight, the street noise is SO LOUD it kept us up until 3AM this morning. NOT COOL! Perhaps it’s because it was the weekend, or maybe there is a club nearby? Fingers crossed for a quiet night tonight, we want to catch the 8AM tomorrow… which means I have to leave you and get packing!
Good night!
