Switzerland 2014 – Day 8 / Schynige Platte & Lauterbrunnen

CHEESE COUNT: fondue 4 / raclette 1

Today we went for hike up in Schynige Platte and we got WAY more than we bargained for in 2 ways.

First: The Views. They promised Panoramic Views up there, but there was rain in the forecast so we kept our expectations low. We took a chance and were rewarded with spectacular panoramas over Interlaken and the Alps... Well worth it! (It did rain eventually, but only for about 5 minutes)

   IMG_6537

IMG_6590 IMG_6546 IMG_6582

Second: The Trail. Holy shit it was scary!!!!

We were not expecting an intermediate trail, we didn’t have trouble walking it, but because it was more demanding than we anticipated we got sweatier than we wanted to be and weren’t dressed in the best way…  but that was not the issue; it was the drops on the side of the trail when we got up to the ridge that make our knees shake!!  (and then got nervous about falling due to having shaking knees! ha!)

These were sharp, sheer drops. Fatal drops – I kid you not!!! One slip and its see-you-later-good-bye!!!! I am not sure if our pictures really give the full effect, we were too scared to lean over any further!!! On the other side, instead of free falling to your death, if you slipped you’d just go careening down the slope and bouncing off the rocks. No big deal.  GULP!

IMG_6569

IMG_6568

The rest of the trail was only a little rough in parts, but overall manageable and fun.

IMG_6588

As usual, we rewarded ourselves with lunch – how nice is it to have a meal with this kind of view?

IMG_6601

After we headed out to the Lauterbrunnen Valley again for an EASY walk…

 IMG_1339 IMG_1340

Relaxed and had a drink in the town…

 IMG_1343 IMG_6619 IMG_1344

Then back to Interlaken for a final fondue supper.  This place wins the prize for cleverest way to serve fondue bread! What a brilliant idea!

IMG_1355

That’s it for Interlaken, we are all packed and ready to move on to our next destination at the crack of dawn tomorrow: almost 5 hours by train to the Italian Canton of Ticino.

Good night!

Switzerland 2014 – Day 6 / Kleine Scheidegg, Wengen, Interlaken

CHEESE COUNT: fondue 3 / raclette 1

Another great day, with cooperating weather!

Today the plan was to hike from Kleine Scheidegg down to Lauterbrunnen.

IMG_1215

The elevation change from top to bottom is over 1200m so the path takes you through alpine vistas, mountain scenery, forests, meadows, fields etc - something for every mood!

Unlike the time posted on the sign, it took us 2 hours and 30 minutes just to reach Wengen due to all the picture stops!

IMG_6329

IMG_6330

This particular cow made us laugh because she looked so angry! And she was blocking the latch on the electrified fence (just a cable) that we had to go through. We were too chicken to go near her and didn’t want to antagonize her so we just crawled under the fence instead. ha! I took this picture after we were ‘safely’ on the other side.

IMG_1228

We stopped for lunch in Wengen and had what else? fondue!

IMG_1239

Then it was back on the trail again. It was only supposed to take an hour to get to Lauterbrunnen from there, but we more than doubled that time since our bellies were so full of fat! It turned into more of a stroll than a hike at that point.

Don’t be fooled by how scenic this appears!

IMG_1253

Most of the trail was downhill, and steep!

I have to admit that it was not really very physically demanding overall, sure walking downhill uses more muscle and I was fine with that…  it’s just that my feet were being shoved into the front of my shoes, putting a lot pressure on my toes and after a few hours of that I was looking forward to the end. We both agreed that we could have lasted much much longer if the end of the trail had been flat. The last hour was all steep switchbacks and my toes are not happy! But aside from that one thing, it was amazing. A fantastically scenic day.

After the hike we relaxed and had a drink in a cafe in Lauterbrunnen, then back to Interlaken by about 5:30.

I wanted to go back up to the Harder Kulm (a nearby mountain top – not that high, only about 1300m) because when I was last in Interlaken in 2011 they were building a look-out deck up there and now you can see it from everywhere in Interlaken. I was intrigued to see it for myself, so up we went.

It’s neat… and great views over the city too!

IMG_6381 IMG_6366

After that, it was off to find a place for supper and then back “home” to crash.  I am so thankful with the weather over the last few days, I really hope it holds out!!

Switzerland 2014 – Day 4 / Interlaken, Lauterbrunnen, Schilthorn

CHEESE COUNT: fondue 1 / raclette 1

I said yesterday I wanted to catch the 8AM train from Bern to Interlaken this morning, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized that was already too late to get going. I calculated that we would need 2 hours from the time we caught the train to the time we’d be ready to start our Interlaken-Adventures, so the 8AM train meant we’d be “starting” the day at 10AM – half the morning gone! So instead, we caught the 6:30AM train and by 9AM our day was well underway.

Because the skies were clear, we decided to walk along the Lauterbrunnen Valley, visit the Trümmelbach Falls, go to the Schilthorn (think 007 and the movie On Her Majesty's Secret Service), explore Murren, then be back in Interlaken by 3-4 ish because I saw that the chances of precipitation in the afternoon increased significantly around that time.

Walking the Lauterbrunnen Valley is something my husband particularly wanted to do; he remembers it so fondly from our last visit in 2011, and this time we walked much further than last time so he was quite pleased.

IMG_6101

IMG_6129

IMG_6082

About an hour down the path are the Trümmelbach Falls – they are quite something! The carving force of water is on full raging (and ear splitting) display, very impressive! Pictures can’t possibly do them justice because it’s the sheer force of the moving water that makes the attraction so awesome, along with the knowledge that your are deep inside the mountain.

IMG_6125

IMG_6107

IMG_1103

From there, we continued about another half hour to the cable car that would take us up to the Schilthorn (actually a series of 4 separate rides to the summit almost 3000m up) and have lunch at the Piz Gloria, a 360° rotating restaurant offering splendid views of the alps.  Wouldn’t you know that’s when the clouds came out!  It was a panoramic view of a white wall.

We did get the occasional glimpse, but it lasted seconds and you had to be quick! Most of the time, by the time I got my Iphone out of my pocket, turned it on and opened the camera app… the hole had closed!  Well, at least lunch was yummy!!!

IMG_6159

IMG_1112

IMG_6160

IMG_1118

So, since we were not into the Bond Museum Experience, we headed out of the cloud after lunch and headed down to Murren to enjoy (mostly) unobstructed alpine views!

IMG_6167

IMG_6175

IMG_6184

So much better!!!!

We came back to the hotel to check in and unpack, I think by then it was about 4ish (hardly a surprise that the room was not ready for us when we arrived at 7:30AM) and then feeling refreshed by that little break, we headed out to enjoy Interlaken a bit more.  Still no signs of rain! Encouraging!

We walked around for a while, then had drinks at a cafe by the park and watched the paragliders land… boy I wish I had the guts to try!!!

IMG_1137

IMG_1146

IMG_1142

By 7, we were off to eat – raclette for me, it was a no brainer!! I don’t usually like it served this way: pre-melted in the kitchen, I prefer having a little stove at the table and melting the cheese myself but since I didn’t want a huge portion anyway, this was OK in the end.

 IMG_1148

IMG_1149

Just as we were leaving the restaurant, I think it was about 8:30, we were greeted with HUGE thunder claps… BOOMING! is it because the storm was going to be ferocious or is it an echo-effect due to the mountains? I don’t know, but it seemed to me the Earth was splitting in two. We made it back to the hotel JUST as the Atlantic Ocean was dumped over Interlaken.

The forecast for tomorrow is about the same… keep your fingers crossed for us that the rain only starts again after supper!!

Switzerland 2011 - A Trip in Review - Day 8 to 11

Our 4th home base was in

INTERLAKEN

This was the longest stop – 4 nights – and I was really not thrilled with the hotel. My fault,  I think I was being a little to stingy when we picked the place. I did save a few bucks, but in hindsight I should have perhaps not squeezed the stone as much as I did.

I have nothing against budget hotels, but let’s all agree that there is a scale and this place was on the low end.  Paper thin walls so you could hear everything in the hallways and in adjacent rooms. Creaky floors. The bathroom was so narrow that when standing at the sink, your back almost touched the wall.  It was hard to wash your face in the sink because the tap was in the way – you could not really lean into the sink. No hair dryer. The TV was not visible from the bed. … … …

But the room was HUGE I will grant them that!

IMG_3141  IMG_3140

I did think the pillows on the bed were cute! …

IMG_3139

IMG_3139

Just like Zermatt, this trip made us realize how much we missed the last time we were in Interlaken. Last time, we got out of the train at the West Station, turned right and walked down the street to see a whole lot of nothing!!! We stumbled across the Heimwehfluh, which kept us busy for about an hour or two, and then we went back to our home-base.

This time, we turned LEFT out of the West Station and the full city unfolded before our eyes. Honest to God. Were we on drugs the last time???  To this day, I don’t quite understand why we did that. I find it hard to imagine that we did not have a guide or a map to give us some idea of what to do in Interlaken. It really doesn’t make sense.

Interlaken was beautiful! Most of the city is the main street that connect the two train stations at either end of town. There are some beautiful old buildings / hotels, a huge park, and of course FANTASTIC views of the alps.

It’s a great home-base city, no regrets!

THUN

On the first day in Interlaken (arriving from Zermatt), the plan was to take a cruise to Thun. Last time we had such a great lunch on the boat we wanted to do it again. This time, the boat and the food SUCKED! It was such a huge disappointment.

My aunt also came with us because she was spending her last day with us before she went back home at the end of the day. (she too agreed that the boat and food were a let-down).

The cruise itself was nice, Lake Thun is always picturesque and it was extra interesting because we also had a celebrity on our boat! Well, my husband and I had NO CLUE that this was a famous person, but my aunt knew!

I have been assured that if you are Swiss, you know who this person is. We tried to get a picture of him…  I even forget now what his name was.  He was also going to Thun, so we got a shot of him in the street.  Do you know who he is??

Singer

Thun is a beautiful place. We didn’t spend too much time there because we’d seen it before, but it was a nice stroll around town.  We lingered about an hour or so.

LUCERNE and excursion to MOUNT PILATUS

If you have been to Switzerland, I would be surprised to learn that you have not been to Lucerne. In fact, if you look up the itinerary of bus tours that hit a bunch of cities in various countries, it always includes Lucerne. It’s such a beautiful place!

We tried recreating a picture we took in 2006, but my husband was a little impatient and didn’t wait until the background was clear. GRRR I was annoyed. He promised me that next time we’d do it right.

Kapellbrücke - Simone 2006 & 2011

On this trip to Lucerne, our plan was to complete the Golden Round Trip up Mount Pilatus.

1- Cruise from Lucerne to Alpnachstadt.
2- World's steepest cogwheel train up to the summit - Pilatus Kulm.
3- Aerial cable car and gondola back down to Kriens.
4- Bus back to Lucerne.

It’s an insanely touristy thing to do!!  Check out the line-up at the train station in Alpnachstadt waiting to board the cogwheel train!

IMG_3198

But so what – it was fun and that’s why you go on vacation! To do the Touristy Things!

The first leg (cruise from Lucerne to Alpnachstadt) was so relaxing. Nice wicker sofas on the deck in stead of hard benches.. beautiful views, blue skies… all that was missing was a cocktail!

Simone 1

The Cog Wheel train was kinda boring I have to say. Sure it’s the steepest in the world, but big deal. We’ve been on funiculars that were WAY steeper… it was a bit over rated.

The summit, as you might expect, afforded us beautiful views.  We didn’t want to have lunch that day (because of our supper plans that you will read later) but when I saw the restaurant at the summit, I wanted to AT LEAST have a drink! So we did… and a cheese plate. MMMM

THE OLD SWISS HOUSE

In April of this year, on our Rhine River Cruise, we met a couple that recommended this restaurant to us knowing we were going to Switzerland in September.

Are we ever glad they did!!! We are in their debt for life! From now on, EVERY trip to Switzerland we make will include dinner at the Old Swiss House in Lucerne.

No question.

We ordered the House Specialty which is Wienerschnitzel prepared table side. What a treat! It was really the restaurant highlight of our entire vacation.

IMG_3283

I was a little hesitant because it was a fancy place and we were in what we consider “Clean Vacation Attire”. We didn’t want to pack extra clothes for just one occasion, and even if we did get dressed up, we were based in Interlaken and planned a whole day in Lucerne and Mount Pilatus… we can’t do all that in dinner clothes!

It was such a beautiful place. We were one of the first to arrive and it was packed by the time we left.

IMG_3272

I admit that we were underdressed. Most people were more dressed up then us, but we did spot some people in jeans.  AH well. That’s Life!

It was such a nice place and the meal was simply outstanding. No matter how we were dressed, they treated us like gold.

Here is a picture of me before I remembered my glasses were on my head! I did take them off!!  I think I should have brought a scarf. It would have been easy to carry and would have dressed me up a bit more.

Simone 2

Look at all the ingredients beautifully laid out …  especially the butter!!!!  Amazingly, the final dish didn’t taste like butter at all.

IMG_3277

IMG_3278

Prepared Table Side… so nice!!

IMG_3279

Best meal of the entire trip.

GSTAAD

Don’t really have much to say about Gstaad.  I had seen it before in 2000 or 2001 (I forget now) with my aunt, but I remembered it SO differently!!

I remembered it better then it actually was… it was really nothing special. We walked around a little, had a drink, ate a delicious raclette-lunch which made the trip worth while, and then headed back to Interlaken.

IMG_3303

JUNGFRAU REGION

This day in the Jungfrau region really peaked my interest in hiking. I really think it’s something I would like to do next time … Man the Swiss are lucky to have SO MANY options! Trails of all kinds, for all levels, with views to die for as you hike along.

A great pair of hiking boots, some walking sticks, a decent back pack, a pic-nic lunch and see you later!

This will be a goal for the next time we are in Switzerland, and Lonely Planet even makes a guide for it!!!!

Guide

Lauterbrunnen

We started our day in Lauterbrunnen  and walked to the famous Staubbach Falls. I like these pictures because you don’t quite realize just how high it is until you look at the trees lining the top of the cliff-face.

Staubbach Falls 9

IMG_3363

We could have walked behind the falls, but we didn’t have our wet weather jackets with us and we didn’t want to get soaked!

My husband was happy because we finally got some good cow-shots!

IMG_3368

IMG_3380

This one is funny because from this angle you only see the head with no body!!  haha

IMG_3379

And look at this goat! He looks HOLLOW!!! compare him to his buddies… gives me shivers!

IMG_3377

Wengen

From Lauterbrunnen, we took the train up to Wengen.

What was nice about it, is that since it was higher up the mountain we got beautiful views of the Lauterbrunnen Valley below us.

IMG_3397

We didn’t spend that much time there, we wandered around the village a little and then stopped for a drink. I tried Appenzeller Alpenbitter for the first time. Oh God it’s gross!

Männlichen

From Wengen, we took a cable car up to Männlichen which is a lookout point on a ridge between the Lauterbrunnen Valley and the Grindelwald Valley. It’s a little over 2300m up.

There is not much to do there other than taking pictures and hiking. It really was gorgeous (and I KNOW I sound like a broken record!!) Next time I am there, I am going hiking for sure.

You also get fantastic shots of “The Big Three” from up there: The Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau mountains – icons of the Swiss Alps.

The sun was not in the best spot for sharp pictures, but we didn’t suffer. It was breath taking! (broken record – I know, I know)

Panorama - Männlichen 2

Grund

From Männlichen, we took the world’s longest gondola cable car ride down to Grund. Well, my guidebook says the longest, but Wikipedia says third longest. I can tell you however, it was boring.

After 5 minutes, the novelty wears off and this ride was about 40 minutes long. OH and it was HOT!!!  like riding in a little green-house. Really not fun!

Once in Grund, we were hungry so we had lunch at the train station restaurant. It was about a 10 minute walk from the cable car, and could it be any more touristy??

English and Japanese signs…

IMG_3451

We had raclette and it was not good. Too salty. Very disappointing! I think in all the times I have had raclette in my life (and trust me… it’s a lot) this was the worst. I can’t really say I am surprised when you consider the place itself! Ah well. Win some lose some.  But we were too hungry to wait … it was already around 2:30PM so we wanted to eat ASAP.

Grindelwald

Grindelwald was about 5 minutes from Grund by train.

I can’t really tell you I loved it. It was nice, but mostly all shopping. We were full after the lousy raclette we had for lunch…  and there was not enough to do to keep us occupied until supper time, so we just had a little stroll and then took the train back to Interlaken.

IMG_3453

Overall: a fantastic day!

End of Part 3 Smile
