Steps today: 24 409 / 16.09 km
Onwards away from Bordeaux and away from the heavy rain - after a disappointing breakfast at the train station, it was off to Bayonne.
The weather was overcast, but overall very comfortable. The room wasn't ready when we arrived at the hotel just before 10:30AM, so we left the bags and set off to enjoy the city.
A visit to Saint Mary's Cathedral where we lit a candle for my father in law... felt sad doing this for him for the first time.
Beautiful Cathedral, very colourful!
A little more exploring after this, Bayonne was very cute!
By a quarter to noon we were already getting hungry for lunch, but nothing was open yet. There were a few cafés around, but we were told the kitchens were not open.
This place appeared like a mirage in front of us and the charcuterie was so delicious we had 2 rounds! What a great find.
We continued our aimless strolling along the river after lunch
Then the citadelle.... sort of... I'm not even sure anymore! and the New Castle
Next, we learned the Pope passed away. We went to the Saint André church, but there were no candles to light.
Drink stop!

We saw the war memorial
And then around 3:15, we decided to go back to the room to check in, unpack and get that all over with. The room was ok, no stupid bathroom door situation here - but there were only plugs on one side of the bed, so I had to sleep on the right side when I normally sleep on the left... which made Frank think he had an extra pillow next to him during the night but he was just stealing mine! ha!
We were back in town by 4ish, when a hard yet quick dump of rain lasting only about 3 minutes cleared many people away from the terrasses leaving lots of room for us.
We strolled around some more after that...
And by 5:30ish we were starting to get hungry for supper. Nothing was open! All the restos opened at 7:30PM and there was no way we could wait that long. I think we were too close to Spain and their custom for late eating. Even the resto at the hotel only opened at 7:30.
We finally just ended up with sandwiches. Boring. Not even a glass of wine. Pretty lousy ending to the day.
