You know what they say about the best laid plans....
Today we changed home bases from Vienna to Regensburg. Since our hotel was right across the street from the train station, I prebooked and reserved seats on the 7:13AM express intercity train to get a direct connection to Regensburg. A 3-hour journey.
When we arrived at the station, what did we find? CANCELLED!
Not the biggest surprise, due to the recent devastating floods there was a lot of destruction, but DAMN! We were re-routed on a 3-train route from Vienna, connecting in Wels, then another connection in Passau, arriving in Regensburg 2 hours later than planned. On a trip where you aren't staying put in one place for very long, these kinds of delays can really impact your plans! But, what can we do - it's out of our control so we have to just go with the flow.
We arrived at the hotel around 1PM, thankfully the room was ready so we unpacked and off to explore. We visited Regensburg on a day trip in 2013 and liked it very much. I said to myself at the time it would be a good home-based city and here we were 11 years later doing just that.
First on the agenda was lunch, and after 4 days in a row of schnitzel, I wanted a break from meat!... but then I had carpaccio so... whatever!
For the rest of the (half) day, we strolled around just enjoying the city. A little rain at time, but not too bothersome.
We also crossed the river and walked along the water - so green, hard to believe it was October.
We happened upon a French place for supper around 6:30 and I dove into a cheese plate, it was perfect!
The walk back to the hotel was a little unpleasant because it was so dark and the streets were not very well lit! It was actually quite spooky! Thanks to Google maps, we didn't get lost on the way.
