Italy 2019 - Day 6 / Rome

Steps today: 23 100… although that is slightly inflated since I have been puttering around the room for a while now packing our bags.

(light blue = on foot / dark blue = bus, metro, train etc)

The map is in two parts because it won't fit into one image.

Last night, we finally slept soundly… thanks to a little Nyquil! The woman next door had a phone conversation around midnight which woke us up a bit, but we were drugged up enough to fall back asleep quickly.

We started the day by visiting the Catacombs of San Callisto. I wanted to explore the area on foot a little bit, so we got off the bus one stop early, but instead of a nice open park to explore, it was a busy street with no sidewalk. Frank was not too happy with me!

It was an interesting guided tour, lasted about 45 minutes…  but no pictures allowed. So annoying!

We did spot a kitty to play with, I felt melancholy about it but he (?) was so cute! As soon as we got close, he yawned lazily and flipped over for a belly rub.

Afterwards, we walked along the Appian Way and I got to see some of the sights I was hoping to see when we got off the bus.

Then, it was Aperol Spritz o'clock!!

Next on the agenda, I visited the baths of Caracalla while Frank rested / napped on a bench nearby. I didn’t bother with guide or a map, I wasn’t that interested in the nitty gritty details today, I was just so impressed by the enormity of it all! HUGE! They did have some virtual reality goggles for rent that let you see what the place looked like way back when, in hindsight perhaps that would have been fun.

After this, we stopped for lunch in a place we discovered in 2013. VERY touristy, but still great.

Nice and full, we then just meandered around town after lunch on an aimless wander soaking in a few sights.

Some crumbling arches on the Colosseum

Check out this interesting fountain in need of a good cleaning! Fontana di Piazza d'Aracoeli. I should have gotten a close up of the built-up crust, it's really neat!

Teatro Marcello

Next, we walked along the Tiber River all the way to St Peter’s,

Then we collapsed from the heat and stopped for some Ice Capps.

We visited the Basilica dei Santi Ambrogio e Carlo al Corso, another eye candy church. WOW.

We lit yet another candle for JR. We’re feeling better about the whole ordeal, but we both dread the emptiness that will great us when we get home.

We continued onwards to Piazza del Popolo, and hunkered down at Rosati Café to relax and just watched the world go by. This café is not cheap! Drinks are twice the price compared to most places, even a glass of water costs 1€! But when you factor in the views of the Piazza, all the fancy free snacks and the HUGE Spritz, it's totally worth it!

After all those snacks, supper was just a small salad at a cute place not far from the Spanish Steps.

Now, it’s time to pack it all up and tomorrow morning we are off to start Part 2 of our Italian Adventures.

Good night!
