Paris 2016 – Day 2

Steps today: I DON’T KNOOOOOOOOWWWW! Argh! so pissed. I forgot to put my fitbit on after I got out of the shower this morning and did not realize it until we had already started our day. After some hemming and hawing I decided not to got back for it, but I have to say that there is a little part of me that regrets it.

We had a really active walking day today, so I KNOW we did the minimum 20K. I am very confident that we did over 24K (I wanted to make up for yesterday since we only did 16K) and if you told me we hit 30K I would not be surprised at all. We were on our feet all day! We hit the road around 8:45AM and only stopped for drinks and meals before we CRASHED for supper around 6:45PM. We walked everywhere and only took the metro once today to go home after supper. We made it back to the room around 8:30PM.

I asked my mom if the pace was too fast and she said no. I asked her if every day was like today would that be ok and she said yes. I asked her if she felt over-stimulated by all the new things she was seeing and experiencing and she said a little bit but only because she wants to remember what everything is called and since there is SO MUCH it’s hard to keep up. So in conclusion I am not wearing her out! (yet?)

The weather today was better than yesterday, the clouds were mostly gone by 11AM and so we had blue skies for almost the entire day. Temperature-wise it’s fine but I have to say I think I am missing a layer. In the morning it’s borderline uncomfortable cold (because of the wind) but in the afternoon it’s absolutely perfect. If I did wear more, I’d be melting in the PM which is worse, but I think I should have brought just one extra layer to wear under my jacket. Ah well, if it gets too bad I will just have to go shopping!

We started our day with a walk through the Jardins de Luxembourg and my mother lost her mind. She was blown away. She loved loved loved loved it. I wrote on Facebook that if I had a penny for every time she exclaimed about how beautiful it all was I would be a rich woman!… but she was so right!

After that, we had breakfast in a café nearby (Coffee, Croissant, O.J.) and walked along Boulevard St Michel to the Latin Quarter.

We gawked at the St Michel Fountain:

Pont Neuf:

The hotel where I stayed in 2004 (how can 12 years have gone by already!!!!)

Then over to Notre Dame. We didn’t go in today, we’re saving that for another time.

Afterwards we explored Ile St Louis and walked around in the Marais, finally stopping for a drink at Place des Voges.  (Kir aux Pêches for me – one of my faves!)

Feeling refreshed it was on to Place de la Bastille, then walking up Richard Lenoir so I could show her where another one of the hotels I previously stayed in was (April 2014 this time). We passed by the Bataclan which was crawling with cops and I didn’t feel like it was appropriate to take pictures.

We walked through Place de la Republique:

Then down “Les Grands Boulevards” looking for a place to have lunch.

After lunch, we went to admire the dome in the Gallerie Lafayette. Insanely beautiful but it’s SO DAMNED HOT AND CROWDED in there that we didn’t linger longer than absolutely necessary!!

Still in a Dome-Mood, we went for a drink at the Brasserie du Printemps. Quite frankly I wasn’t in the mood for a drink, but we wanted to relax and admire the ceiling so I caved. I’m glad I did because I like the picture I got of my drink in the mirrored table!

Back on the road again, we went to the Opera House to see if it was too late for a tour – it was so we’ll try again another day. We could have stood here all day trying to get a picture WITHOUT a bus in it!! We eventually just told ourselves that this is the way we will have to remember it: full of obstacles.

Since we had such nice blue skies, we decide to head over to Place de la Concorde and retake some of the cloudy pictures we took yesterday.  What a difference background colours make!

Once that was done, we walked to the Alma Tunnel to see the Diana Memorial:

Then finished our sightseeing day at the Eiffel Tower. The clouds were back by then so no blue sky version for better pictures, but we’ll have plenty more opportunities!

I PIGGED OUT for supper and I am regretting it now, I feel awful. I had the mother of all cheese plates… it was amazing, but could have fed 4 people.  Instead, it just fed one Simone.

Now it’s time to slip into a coma!!

Goodnight!
